Situations that may make you eligible to purchase ACA/Obamacare coverage through a special enrollment period are if you or a family member had any of these life events;
- lost health insurance within the past 60 days or expect to lose coverage in the next 60 days. This does not mean coverage lapsed due to non-payment of premium,
- got married
- had a baby
- adopted a child or had a child placed with you for foster care
- got divorced and lost health insurance
- moved outside your health plans coverage area
- had a change in income
- gained citizenship or lawful presence in the U.S.
- released from incarceration (jail or prison)
- are a member of a federally recognized tribe or an Alaska Native corporation shareholder.
Other Health Insurance Options
If you missed the annual open enrollment period in the fall to sign up for an affordable Care Act (ACA) plan or you don’t qualify to enroll under a special enrollment period you may be able to purchase a Short-Term health insurance plan. We can now offer a Short-Term health insurance plan that you can keep up to as long as three years. At the end of the three years you could apply for another short-term plan if you wish. Short-Term plans are often a substantially lower premium than an ACA plan especially if your income is too high to qualify for a premium tax credit under an ACA plan. We are Medicare Certified so we can help you with your Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement needs. The fall Medicare Annual Open Enrollment period begins October 15 and ends December 7. We can assist you in selecting and purchasing a Medicare Advantage plan or a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (part D) or a standard Medicare Supplement during this enrollment period. After this annual open enrollment period ends then the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is from January 1 through March 31. This allows people who are already covered by a Medicare Advantage Plan to change to a different Medicare Advantage plan or drop their Medicare Advantage Plan coverage and go back to regular Medicare coverage. Part D prescription drug coverage could also be purchased in this scenario if going back to regular Medicare. A Medicare Supplement could be purchased but will be subject to answering health questions and being approved for a regular Medicare Supplement if you are outside the “guarantee issue” period of when you first become eligible for Medicare coverage usually at age 65. When someone is first eligible to purchase any type of Medicare coverage during your “Initial Election Period” ordinarily when you turn age 65 your selected available coverage will be issued on a “guarantee issue” basis during the 3 months prior to and 3 months after your 65th birthday. Contact us and we will help you select your coverage as we offer both standard Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Part D).
